How many of us have seemingly never-ending supplies of cleaning products in our homes? What if I told you you can literally swap out that surplus for one bottle? Yes, one bottle! Since we started our essential oil journey, we have been slowly swapping out some of the not-so-healthy cleaning products for cleaning products that contain no chemical toxins. In doing so, we have found several new favorite products that we cannot live without. One of our new favorites is the Thieves Household Cleaner from Young Living. Being able to replace many household cleaners that we use for each job to just one bottle to get the job done is such a relief. It not only helps create a healthier home for my family but it also helps us get rid of some clutter.
In a recent study I came across**, they were comparing long-term effects of exposure to the chemical toxins in common household cleaners and lung capacity. The study consisted of 6000 men and women and oversaw them for 20 years. The results were rather shocking.
- Forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), or the amount of air a person can forcibly exhale in one second, declined 3.6 milliliters (ml)/year faster in women who cleaned at home and 3.9 ml/year faster in women who worked as cleaners.
- Forced vital capacity (FVC), or the total amount of air a person can forcibly exhale, declined 4.3 ml/year faster in women who cleaned at home and 7.1 ml/year faster in women who worked as cleaners.
Based off their findings you can see that both the FEV1 and FVC levels declined after use of the cleaners containing chemical toxins. Furthermore, they went on to include that using the cleaners as little as once per week can accelerate the decrease in lung capacity. Their overall conclusion was that the overall decline in lung capacity was compared to that of someone who smokes somewhat less than 20 pack-years. A heavy smoker with greater than 20 pack-years, had an average FEV1 of 6.1 ml/year and a FVC of 8.9 ml/year compared to the decline due to the use of cleaners of 4.3 and 7.1 ml/year respectively.
So what does all this mean? One would need to smoke either 20 cigarettes a day for 20 years or 10 cigarettes a day for 40 years to achieve the same amount of lung capacity decline as using chemical household cleaners!
I already swapped out our huge stash of cleaners for Thieves Household Cleaner before ever running across this study. The ease of cleaning and lack of chemical toxins was a great plus for me and my family. My husband has always been more on the sensitive side of smells, so that was something I am always mindful of. Using Young Living essential oils and their essential oil-infused products have not affected his sinuses negatively like many other scented products. After finding this study, it gives me even more reassurance that eliminating chemical toxins from our home was definitely the right choice!
